Synopsis

A stage adaptation of M. Raihan Halim's acclaimed 2023 film (Singapore's entry for the Academy Awards), La Luna is set in the fictional conservative village of Kampung Bras Basah. The arrival of an unwelcome newcomer, Hanie, who opens a modern lingerie shop, sends a quiet upheaval through the community. Her shop becomes a private sanctuary for the village women, even as her presence unsettles long-held social codes and awakens desires that have long remained unspoken.

As villagers navigate the contradictions between tradition and change, conformity and desire, belief and personal freedom, characters such as the authoritarian headman Tok Hassan and the spirited student Azura confront shifting values around morality, desire and control within their community.

An Esplanade Commission presented by Teater Ekamatra as part of Pesta Raya - Malay Festival of Arts 2026, the production was performed in Malay with English surtitles and ran approximately two hours with no intermission.
